Bethany Hamilton was born on the island Kaua'i (Hawaii) and grew up in a surfing family. She took part in surfing competitions very early on but lost her left arm in tiger shark attack when she was just 13 years old. This seemed to be the end of her surfing career. But Bethany wouldn't give in. Two years after the accident she was back on the surf board and won her first international surfing competition. At the age of 17 she realized her dream of surfing professionally.
